Choosing a cloth

Percale if you sleep hot, like a crisp feel and do not mind creases. Sateen if you sleep cold, want a smooth, slightly heavier cloth with a low sheen, and can live with the occasional pulled thread. If you iron nothing, ever, look at the washed cotton instead. The guide has a table.

Not on its own. Thread count is threads per square inch, and above about 400 it is usually reached by counting plied yarns twice. Our percale is 200 and our sateen 300 because those are the counts at which each weave does what it is for. We give gsm for the washed cotton and the linen because thread count is a meaningless number for those cloths.

Because a one-over-one weave with no resin finish has nothing holding it flat. Many “non-iron” sheets get there with a formaldehyde-based resin; ours do not. Make the bed with the sheet still slightly damp and it will dry flat under its own weight, or iron it, or accept it. Most people accept it inside a month.

Yes, gently. Garment-dyed shades such as dusk rose, blush, plum and clay lighten by roughly one tone over a year of weekly washing. They fade evenly, not in patches, and white does not change. If you want a shade that stays put for years, buy percale or sateen, which are dyed before sewing.

For the first three or four washes in your own machine, slightly, yes - even after two stone washes at the mill. After that it softens every time and never stops. It also creases more than anything else on the site. Both are the fibre, not a fault.

Sizes and fit

The mattress size, in centimetres: 90 × 200, 140 × 200, 160 × 200, 180 × 200 or 200 × 200. Fitted sheets fit that mattress; flat sheets are cut 60 cm wider and 40 cm longer than it; duvet covers fit the duvet usually paired with it. The size guide has the whole table.

The 35 cm wall on the cotton sheets fits a mattress of 18 to 30 cm. The 38 cm linen wall fits up to 33 cm. The 42 cm deep percale fits 28 to 38 cm, which covers most pocket-sprung mattresses with a topper. Measure with the topper on and buy a wall at least 5 cm deeper.

Measure the pillow, not the old case. 50 × 70 is the continental standard, 60 × 60 the square common in France, 80 × 80 the large square used in Germany and Austria. The cases in the bedding sets are 50 × 70; for square pillows buy the cover and a pair of cases separately.

The percale and sateen are pre-washed once and shrink a further 2 to 3% in your first hot wash, which is why every piece is cut over size. The washed cotton has already shrunk in the enzyme wash. The linen moves about 2% more in the first hot wash.

White, ivory and the undyed linen, yes. Reactive-dyed percale shades such as plum, very nearly. Piece-dyed linen shades such as moss and sage can sit half a tone apart between batches, and garment-dyed washed cotton depends on how many times you have washed the first piece. Tell us the earlier order number and we check the lot before dispatch.

Guarantee, trial, shipping

Sleep on any piece for up to 30 nights, wash it as often as you like, and if it is not right send it back for a full refund of the item price. Washed returns are laundered and donated to a shelter, not resold. It sits on top of your 14-day statutory right of withdrawal, not instead of it.

Any seam, hem, button, tie, envelope or elastic that fails inside the first 300 washes is repaired or the piece replaced, postage paid both ways in the EU. It covers how the piece was made, not holes from claws, bleach marks, scorching, sateen pilling or the fading of a garment-dyed shade. Details on the about page.

From one warehouse in Belgium, within two working days of the order. Anything can come back within 30 days of delivery for any reason. Return postage is yours unless the piece was faulty or we sent the wrong one; faulty pieces can come back at any time under the guarantee.

No. One house, one site, no wholesale, no hotel contracts, and no logo woven into anything. It is how we keep the prices where they are.
